In the galleries of the Palais Bonaparte in Rome, Arthemisia presents a brand new project by one of the greatest masters of contemporary photography. Since 2017, Mario Testino has visited around thirty different countries and crea ted more than 70 large format photographs brought together in this exhibition for the first time. Mario Testino is recognized as one of the most important fashion photographers of his generation and he has chosen to focus here on portraits of traditional cos tumes and clothing worn with pride by the population of each country. Peruvian of Irish and Italian origin, born in 1954, Mario Testino began his career in London in 1976. “A Magnificent World” constitutes a most fascinating new approach to his work. Having become a legend in his art, just like the icons he photographed, he has been called by Terence Pepper, curator of photography at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the «John Singer Sargent of our time», while the director of the gallery, Charles Saumarez Smith, placed his work in 2002 in the lineage of court painters from Holbein to Reynolds and from Goya to Rubens.

With this exhibition, Mario Testino explores the beauty of cultural singularity in a rapidly globalizing world.

His photographer’s eye was able to capture the expression of individuality in accor dance with the rituals of the community. Symbols and belief systems are found in each being who wears their tradition on edge, creating in the present a deep link with the history of their country, thus ensuring the sustainability of its culture for its future.

A journey to the heart of souls in their colors shaped by space and time of great beauty...

“During my travels, I realized that when a country loses the connection between its history and its traditional dress, something truly precious is lost” Mario Testino
