Loppem Castle

Bruges, “the Venice of the North”, is not simply limited to its wonders of cobbled streets, canals and the history of its elegant palaces. Its beauties include the incredible Bruges hinterland made up of castles, gardens and residences in the heart of a green countryside. Over the centuries, the serenity of Flemish nature has attracted local nobility to build their impressive residences, often in neo-Gothic brick style. Running alongside the woods and welcoming villages, paths ideal for walks or bike rides lead to these castles, some of which have today become hotels or guest houses. In sunny weather, a cycle loop crosses meadows, small hamlets and very beautiful estates such as the Tudor and Tillgem Castles or Zevenkerken Abbey. Loppem Castle, built between 1852 and 1856, is undoubtedly the most famous example of Flemish neo-Gothic style due to the reputation of its architects of course but also by its size and its furniture typical of the genre. Built on an island and surrounded by canals, a pond and an English-style park, this truly romantic castle houses extensive collections of works of art. Its incredible labyrinth is made up of a kilometer and a half of hedges with such an attractive charm in their meanders that it is pleasant to lose yourself in an endless reverie. North of Bruges, near the village of Damme, it is possible to visit the garden of Oostkerke Castle by appointment. Located in the middle of the polders, pieces of dyked land, this castle dating from the 14th century, welcomes its guests with two majestic statues of lions which are revealed after crossing an avenue of willows and ancient ramparts. Baron Robert Van Der Elst, a multilingual nature enthusiast, likes to show off his magnificent medieval-style garden.
